Featured in the popular mobile game “Travel Frog,” Amanohashidate (meaning “Bridge to Heaven”) has long been rated as one of Japan's top 3 views. This ‘bridge’ is, in fact, a 3.6-kilometer long, pine covered sandbar spanning across Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto. Stand at either end of the strip, turn back, bend down, and view the scenery from between your legs—this is how you’re supposed to take in the view—and you’ll see how the place got its name: the sandbar looks as if it’s ascending through the sky to the heavens, creating a uniquely divine scenery. ◆Ine no Funaya (boat houses of Ine): Venice of Japan Ine, located in the beautiful “Kyoto by the Sea” region, is a small fishing village where you get to see the ancient times in the present. Here at the “Venice of Japan,” more than 200 Funaya’s—unique buildings that date back to the 1700s— line the shore of Ine Bay, giving the illusion of a town floating on the sea. Back in the day, the buildings were meant for hanging up fishing nets and served as storage houses for wooden boats. Today’s Funaya are 2-story huts where the first floor is a boat dock/storage area and the second floor residences of the fishermen. Come catch a glimpse of traditional Japanese lifestyles, and enjoy the simple beauty of life co-existing with nature. ◆Miyama Kayabuki no Sato, Village of Thatched-Roof Houses Miyama, a remote, rural area in the mountains of Kyoto, is known for its villages where centuries-old Kayabuki, or thatched roof houses, still exist. With over 200 thatched huts tucked against the mountainside, the majority of which still home to traditional crafts people including carpenters, thatchers and basket makers, the place offers a truly authentic and rural experience like few others. Take a stroll around, and enjoy the quaint charm of this quiet mountain village. ◆Lunch: All-you-can-eat seafood at Amanohashidate!
