It used to house the Imperial Diet of the German Empire and Weimar Republic. Today, the Bundestag (German parliament) assembles at this place which regained its grandeur after the restoration and renovation efforts. At night, the mirrors illuminate the dome to create a surreal vision of architectural beauty. ■Original Sites of the Apocalyptic Battle of Berlin in 1945 The Soviet Union caused the Fall of Berlin. But Hitler had already committed suicide before Berlin could be completely taken over by the Red Army. ■Brandenburg Gate This iconic landmark symbolizes the reunified Germany. It’s Germany’s first Neo-classical building which was built in late 18th century with a Quadriga statue as a crowning glory. When Napoleon conquered the city, he took the Quadriga to symbolize his triumph over Germany. After his fall, the statue was returned to Berlin and restored to its position of prestige. ■Pariser Platz This famous square, with the Brandenburg Gate facing it, is another site that was restored after the Reunification. Today, embassies, a 5-star hotel, and luxurious townhouses make up part of its impressive surroundings. ■Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe Upon the parliament’s decision to establish a memorial for the Jewish victims of the Nazi regime, 2711 concrete slabs of varying height and wave-like appearances were erected in a special location in Berlin. The winning abstract design motivates visitors to think deeply about the Holocaust and the vital lessons to be learned about humanity. ■Topography of Terror This place is located between the former Gestapo headquarters and Reich Security Main Office where tangible evidence of the Nazi persecution and acts of genocide are on exhibit as a remembrance and a warning against this kind of evil. It also tells the story of Berlin before, during, and after Nazi rule. ■Checkpoint Charlie This used to the crossing point between West and East Germany, where border guards were in constant alert of people from the East wanting to defect from the USSR-occupied part of Germany to the West which was under the Allied Forces. It’s one of the starkest remembrances of the Cold War. ■Berlin Wall The Fall of the Berlin Wall is one of the most historic events in Germany. Built by the Soviet Union to stop the flow of emigrants, it did not prevent people from attempting to escape the repressive East at the risk of their lives. Today, there’s only a few sites where the remains of the Berlin Wall can be seen.
